Lost in Space profile

The acclaimed 3D digital design and film agency Lost in Space was established just over ten years and is still setting the trend in cutting-edge image-making and contemporary graphics. We talked to main man Christian Hogue about the company's work and you can also see the the first instalment of a new Flash animation created by Lost in Space's Rob Rae.

Can you explain how Lost in Space got started?

"Lost in Space was originally set up in 1990 as the first independent 3D digital effects and animation unit within a post production company in the UK. This was at Rushes in London. Lost in Space became totally independent in 1995, moving to Islington, London, and in 1997 we started to hire designers and train them in 3D with the aim of developing a new aesthetic for 3D. Lost in Space transformed itself into a creative design studio specialising in design-based 3D solutions for contemporary imagery both moving and still."

How many designers/directors does the company represent and who are they?

"We represent Rob Rae, (designer, motion graphics and animation); Leo Marcantonio, (designer, 2D and 3D, print and motion graphics); Dan Capstick, (designer, 3D animation); Noah Harris, (designer, branding and identity); and I work largely in visual effects and experimental animation."

Does Lost in Space have an agenda or mission statement? Are you championing people who are constantly pushing boundaries?

"We focus on 'Images of the future: bleeding edge imagery for any medium.'

"We select promising talent that's using emerging technologies and apply their skills to the advertising markets – focusing on commercials – but also ensure that they'll have a broad applicability to promos and feature film as well."

What kind of clients do Lost in Space work for?

"We work for advertising agencies, TV networks and stations, broadcast and feature film production companies, music companies, and design companies."

What prompted the move towards working with directors as well as designers?

"Our designer/directors are certainly leading creative talents themselves who can direct a digital-oriented commercial as well as design a title, ident or entire network branding package."

Is it important for these designers/directors to keep developing their own personal work and work on non-client based experimental projects too?

"Very much so. Couldn't stop them if it tried! Seriously though, it's only perceptual experimentation that drives the studio forward into new areas and keeps it fresh."

Which designers originally inspired/influenced you and who do you admire currently working today?

"Saul Bass, Sid Mead, Bernard Lodge, Yoichiro Kawaguchi, Ulrike Gabriel, Chris Wedge, Stanley Kubrick, Steve Williams, William Latham, Neville Brody, HR Giger, Enki Bilal, Philippe Starck, Orson Welles, Peter Greenaway, John William Waterhouse, Jim Burns, Tinto Brass, David Fincher, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Sarah Harmarnee."

What are your favourite Lost in Space projects?

"The Prises de Fer created by Sarah Harmarnee and Leo Marcantonio for V magazine; the Nike poster for Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam by Leo Marcantonio; the Cerillion Technologies film corporate art commission by myself; and the design and information graphics on KPMG global campaign for JWT New York that was by all the crew."
